DJ Miss T Biography

Thembi Mkhumbene AKA Dj Miss T SA is the 1st independent female, Kwaito DJ. She was born on the 22nd of January, in Thokoza but now resides in Tembisa. Her dress-code is Mathanda kitchen, Samson Overall and Converse All-Star sneakers of all colours.

They said “Kwaito music is dead” but Dj Miss T, tends to disagree. The 1st Kwaito DJ who tattooed Kwaito Diva on her left arm is not a stranger to entertainment venues. Her debut single is titled M’turn Around, and she features KwaZulu-Natal born house vocalist, Magaye Cele.

She has been a Kwaito fan since she was young but only started her music career in 2016. Her unique dress code and ability to touch the soul with her mixes, has even attracted fans from all over the World. While travelling on her musical journey, DJ Miss T has shared the stage with the likes of Spikiri, Stilo Magolide, Nasty C, Mapaputsi, Skhokho, 2.5, Mshoza, Alaska, DJ Kaygee, Amon Mokoena, Moonchild, Proverb, Busiswa, Vusi Nova, Zonke, Bhekezela and Jakarumba, just to mention a few.

She has played in & outside South Africa in places such as Caprivi, Justice Place, Lemba Café, Voltage Lounge, Barrels Place, Ha Pita (Lesotho/Maseru), MT Lounge, Moshito Music Festival,Tembisa Street Food Market and Boiketlong Pub. When she was part of The Southern Africa Music Festival, Dj Miss T also travelled to Swaziland, Mozambique and Lesotho.

Apart from building her music career, DJ Miss T has taken it upon herself to teach and also assist aspiring female DJ’s with regards to women empowerment and teaching them all about the good and bad of the music industry. “I have heard many women tell me stories of times they were taken advantage of by men who are supposed to teach them how to play” Says the Kwaito Diva who has named this initiative, Female DJ’s Lifestyle (FDL). “My dream is to one day be able to help mentor

and teach many young women through FDL and hopefully change the perception that our male counterparts hold about female DJ’s”.

Dj Miss T was also a nominee at the Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards in 2017 and 2018. She was nominated in the Best Kwaito DJ category with Jozi FM’s Kwaito specialist, DJ Fisha Fasha, DJ Mgiftana and the legendary DJ Dino Bravo.

Whenever asked why Kwaito Music alone and what’s her mission, her response is: “The reason I play Kwaito alone is that Kwaito Music is the culture of South Africa. When it comes to music genres that emerged in Johannesburg here in South Africa during the 90’s, Kwaito is a form of self-expression & a way of life, it is the way South Africans used to dress, speak & dance it is a street style as lifestyle where the music reflects life in the township”. She continues to say, “My mission is not to bring back Kwaito, because it never left us at all. My mission is to keep the genre blazing on the airwaves and for our youth to know where it all started & most importantly, to keep the culture of spantsula dance and Kwaito music”.

For her 2nd annual Birthday Celebration, DJ Miss T decided to use her influence to assist the orphans of Bakgwetha Orphans Center by using her birthday celebration to collect stationary for the learners at the center. The interest from people was overwhelming and she therefore decided to extend this initiative and run it for the whole year by handing out stationary 4 times a year to different orphanages around her community

DJ Miss T can be heard mixing it live on Transafrica Radio every Thursday at 10:30am. The Morning Mayhem is the name of the show and Woza Kleva on Mahikeng FM is where you will find DJ Miss T every Saturday night at 21:30pm
